Protect Cloud Environments with Confidence
Learn how cloud environments are secured, from identity and configuration to logging, monitoring and threat detection, with a clear view of what the provider protects and what you are responsible for.
- Shared responsibility in the cloud
- Cloud identity and access controls
- Secure configuration fundamentals
- Logging, monitoring and threat detection
Course overview
About This Course
Cloud Security covers the principles and controls used to protect workloads and data on cloud platforms, and the most common ways cloud environments are exposed.
Moving to the cloud changes how security works. Identities and configuration become the main line of defence, resources can be created in minutes, and a single misconfiguration can make data public. Understanding these differences is essential for anyone who builds or secures cloud systems.
You will learn how responsibility is split between provider and customer, how to apply least-privilege access, how to avoid common misconfigurations, how to protect data and networks, and how to use cloud logs to detect and respond to threats.
The course is part of our Cybersecurity learning paths and pairs well with our Cloud Computing courses. Examples draw on concepts shared by major platforms such as Microsoft Azure, AWS and Google Cloud.
Who it is for

Learning outcomes
What You Will Learn
By working through the course, you will build towards being able to:
Explain the shared responsibility model across infrastructure, platform and software services.
Design least-privilege access using roles, policies, multi-factor authentication and service identities.
Recognise common misconfigurations such as public storage, open network rules and excessive permissions, and explain how to prevent them.
Apply cloud network security concepts such as virtual networks, security groups and private endpoints.
Describe how encryption and key management protect cloud data.
Use cloud logging and monitoring to recognise signs of suspicious activity.
Outline how to respond to common cloud security incidents.
Curriculum
Course Curriculum
The course is organised into modules. Session order and depth may vary by training arrangement.
-
Module 1: Cloud security foundations
What changes about security in the cloud, and who is responsible for what.
Topics covered include
Practical activity: Divide security responsibilities between provider and customer for sample services.
-
Module 2: Identity and access in the cloud
Identity is the main security boundary in the cloud. Learn to manage it well.
Topics covered include
Practical activity: Review a sample set of permissions and reduce them to least privilege.
-
Module 3: Secure configuration and posture
How to avoid the misconfigurations behind many cloud incidents.
Topics covered include
Practical activity: Spot the misconfigurations in a sample cloud environment description.
-
Module 4: Network and data protection
Protecting cloud networks and the data stored in them.
Topics covered include
Practical activity: Design network and data protections for a simple three-tier application.
-
Module 5: Logging, monitoring and threat detection
Using cloud telemetry to see what is happening in your environment.
Topics covered include
Practical activity: Investigate sample cloud activity logs to identify suspicious behaviour.
-
Module 6: Responding to cloud incidents
What to do when something goes wrong in a cloud environment.
Topics covered include
Practical activity: Walk through the response to a simulated exposed-credentials incident.
Practical learning
Hands-On Learning
Practical activities focus on designing, reviewing and investigating cloud configurations. Examples include:
Practical work uses sample environments and data, or cloud environments you are authorised to use. If any activity needs a cloud account, we'll explain the options when you enquire.
- Least-privilege reviews of sample permissions
- Misconfiguration reviews of sample cloud environments
- Designing network and data protections for sample applications
- Investigating sample cloud activity logs
Before you start
Prerequisites and Learning Requirements

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Which cloud provider does the course use?
The course focuses on security concepts that apply across major providers, with examples from platforms such as Microsoft Azure, AWS and Google Cloud. Ask us which platform is used in your training arrangement.
Do I need a cloud account?
Not to understand the concepts. If practical activities need a cloud account, we'll explain the options when you enquire.
Is this a cloud certification course?
No. The course focuses on practical cloud security skills. It is not an official cloud provider certification course.
Do I need prior experience?
Security fundamentals and basic cloud concepts are recommended. If you are new to either, start with Cybersecurity Fundamentals or one of our Cloud Computing courses.
How can I enquire about upcoming training?
Select Enquire About This Course. The enquiry form will note that you are asking about Cloud Security, and we'll get back to you with upcoming batches and available schedules.
